NAIROBI - Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Kenya on Tuesday to try to end a political crisis in which at least 650 people have been killed, and urged the feuding parties to start talks and respect the rule of law.
The disputed re-election of President Mwai Kibaki in a Dec. 27 vote unleashed weeks of ethnic and political violence that have severely damaged one of Africa's most promising economies and left around 250,000 people homeless.
Despite pressure from Western powers, and to the disgust of millions of ordinary Kenyans, Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga have still not met to discuss a way out of the crisis.

Greek Police Break Up International Sex Trafficking Ring, HumanTrafficking.org, December 17, 2007
        Police raids in Greece's two largest cities on Thursday shut down a network trafficking in women for the sex trade in Greece and several other countries.
        About 200 police officers raided houses and businesses in Athens and Thessaloniki in an operation overseen by the international police organizations Europol and Interpol. Thirty suspects were arrested — nine gang members and 21 associates, police said.
        Thousands of women from Eastern Europe and the Balkans are forced into prostitution each year in Greece and other European countries under the pretext of helping them find jobs in the West. Police said in a statement that the police action had "broken up one of the biggest criminal gangs active in the sexual exploitation of immigrant women in our country."

WASHINGTON -- More than 1,300 alleged violent gang members and their associates, many of them undocumented immigrants, were arrested during a three-month crackdown in 23 cities, including Los Angeles and San Diego, federal officials said Tuesday.
        The arrests, announced by Julie L. Myers, head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, were part of a national initiative called Operation Community Shield that targets violent transnational street gangs. The ICE's enforcement powers include the authority to deport undocumented immigrants and legal immigrants who have committed crimes. ...
        The largest number of individuals arrested this summer were reputed members or associates of the Mara Salvatrucha organization, commonly referred to as MS-13. It is one of the most violent and rapidly growing transnational street gangs. ...
        Of the 1,313 individuals arrested, 939 were charged with immigration violations and face deportation proceedings. The remaining 374 face more serious criminal charges, including drug possession, assault, firearms violations and reentering the country after deportation.
